Nightal 26, 1371 (continued) to Nightal 29, 1371

Date:

Nightal 26, 1371 (continued)

Weather:

Cloudy. Winds Northerly force 2, Light Rain

With the evil black orb lying shattered on the ground the Party, concerned that the dark magic of the orb may have been the reason that the Zombies did not leave the forest, make their way quickly to the beach. Here they debate there next move, while keeping a careful eye on the forest. Eventually they decide that Carandel should use the Candle of Transmutation (Eagle), to get close to the enemy ship and try to find out as much information as possible.

Anxiously the Party await Carandel’s return and just as they are about to take action to find him they see him swimming round the coastline towards them in human form. He reports that he managed to listen to the sailors discussing the recent events. He picked up the following general comments; that the crew were lucky to be alive after the storm, Gelphor used dark magic to protect them and some sailors disapproved of this, the sailors considered themselves well paid, Gelphor was a tough and unforgiving employer, the only time they had seen Gelphor in a good mood was at the Sahuagin Trident when he looked at the spires of rock through a strange metal object with a centre of blue glass.

Canandel then managed to position himself outside the open window of Gelphor’s cabin and heard Gelphor say to the ship’s captain, “the fools, they activated the Tower for me!”. He then also overheard him say, “the new tower is nearly complete”.

The Party returned to the ship and discussed the general situation with Captain Orodan, the result being the Captain Giving the order to set sail immediately for Baldur’s Gate, repairs to be completed en route.

The Party took the next few days to discuss recent events focusing mainly on the implications of building a new tower to the extent that Delfen was contacted for additional advice. Delfen informed them that he had had word from his elvish friends who said that a tower did exist near Unicoen Run in The High Forest, but that the tower was sealed and considered a holy site. In summary, it seems that by creating a pentagram, (a tower), with one point moved outside of its circle you can corrupt the pentagram and give it vastly different powers. The act of corrupting an existing pentagram could reverse the nature of the original pentagram. A view was put forward that if the Netherese were creating a new tower to corrupt the Pentagram then it was likely to be the tower in the Serpent Hills.

The Party arrived in port to be greeted by an armed guard from the Flaming Fist mercenary company who had orders to bring them before Grand Duke Eltan. With little choice the Party are taken to the palace and taken to a reception room where they are offered food and drinks.

Shortly they are joined by Duke Eltan who after initial introductions asks bluntly why members of the Daggerford Militia are in his city. After a brief attempt by Elrad to play dumb it is obvious that the Duke knows more about them than he is letting on so the Party explain their story from the Tower in Lizard Marsh to the recent visit to the Sahuagin Trident.

The Duke, praises them for their actions in destroying the Black Orb of the Sahuagin and arranges for their accommodation at The Helm and Cloak, the most prestigious and expensive inn in Baldur's Gate. Later that day the Duke summons the Party back to the palace.

Duke Eltan explains that he has been looking into their story and has decided to offer the Party help in their quest in return for which he expects them to report back to him their findings as and when they can. The help he offers is access to a Portal within the city that will take them to the High Moor and save a significant amount of time in their journey to the Serpent Hills.
